| Extensive discussion of an anecdote told by Roger de Piles in his Cours de peinture par principes about an illusionistically painted girl leaning on a window sill, a work he subsequently bought. Argues that, although the anecdote is related to comparable painters' stories, it does contain an element of truth: the work in question can be identified with a painting in the Dulwich Picture Gallery, London. De Piles probably bought the Rembrandt painting in Amsterdam in 1693, during his mission as a spy for Louis XIV. |
