John Stewardson, né à Philadelphie, Pennsylvanie (États-Unis) le 21 mars 1858, fils de Thomas Stewardson et de Margaret Haines, frère aîné d'Emlyn Lamar Stewardson (1863-1936), descendant de Thomas Stewardson émigré du Westmoreland, Angleterre, à Philadelphie en 1789, early education in private schools in the Philadelphia area, puis élève à l'Adams Academy, Quincy, Ma., en 1873, graduated in 1877, puis à Harvard College, quitte Harvard en 1879 pour partir à Paris, présenté par sa légation le 1er mars 1880, élève de Jean Louis Pascal (à l'atelier le 6 mars 1880 depuis octobre 1879), admis en 2è classe le 4 avril 1881, obtient une seule 1è mention en projet rendu pour un total de 2 valeurs le 12 août 1881, passe tous ses temps libres à voyager et faire des croquis, quitte l'atelier en juillet 1882 (architecte et artiste à Philadelphie, travaille d'abord comme dessinateur chez Theophilus Parsons Chandler(1845-1928) puis chez Furness & Evans; part en Europe en 1884 avec son ami Wilson Eyre (1858-1944) et visite l'Italie et la Belgique; de retour à Philadelphie, s'associe à Walter Cope (1860-1902) en juillet 1885, firme Cope & Stewardson, rejoints par Emlyn L.
