Through an examination of four Gobelins tapestries from the Histoire du Roy series, designed by Charles Le Brun (late 1660s; Musee national du Chateau de Versailles), explores the style of contemporary detailed realism that distinguishes the series, a style recommended by Louis XIV himself, realized by Le Brun, and praised by Charles Perrault in his poem La Peinture. Surveys the evidence (including Perrault's poem) indicating a controversy between proponents of the new style and the defenders of conventional history painting, who advocated an allegorical approach to the depiction of current events.
