Considers some opening scenes in four plays by Moliere, Landois and Diderot which reflect aspects of de Piles's new ideas about painting and its impact on the viewer. The changing roles of language and visual effects apparent in these opening scenes can be seen as representative of the overall changes that 18th-c. writers were trying to bring about in the theater.
